Project 25 specifically targets mission-critical public safety requirements. Recognizing the need for common public safety standards for interoperable digital equipment and systems, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), along with several public safety organizations, developed and established Project 25 (P25) in 1993.

Overview

    • The deployment of P25-compliant systems allows for a high degree of equipment interoperability, compatibility and economy of scale. P25 systems can be maintained and upgraded cost effectively over the system’s life cycle, thereby meeting user requirements, achieving interoperability and security, promoting committed manufacturers to provide compliant products, fostering competition and achieving cost-effective emergency/safety communications solutions. In light of recent worldwide events, interoperability among first responders is a key initiative of many countries. Motorola’s ASTRO ®  25 Integrated Voice and Data Networks meet the Project 25 Phase 1 standards and have been deployed by public safety customers around the world who need the reliability of mission critical communications. ASTRO ®  25 networks also provide interoperability with other neighboring Project 25 networks. Phase 1 Manufacturers are currently shipping Phase 1 P25-compliant systems. These systems involve standardized specifications ensuring that any manufacturer’s compliant subscriber radio has access to the services described in such specifications, regardless of the manufacturer of the network infrastructure. Phase 2 A goal of the evolving P25 Phase 2 implementation is to improve public safety spectrum efficiency. In addition, Phase 2 is focused on compatibility of infrastructure equipment and subsystems from multiple manufacturers. P25 has been widely adopted throughout the world. P25 is gaining worldwide acceptance for public safety, security, public service and commercial applications. Motorola is committed to the Project 25 standards process.
